Getting Ready for Your New Computer
To ensure you're fully prepared for the arrival of your new computer, it's essential to complete the following steps for a seamless transition.
Step 1: Backup Important Data to OneDrive using the app or the cloud.

Step 1: Backup Important Data to OneDrive using the app or the cloud.
Save Documents to the OneDrive Application:
- Sign In to OneDrive:
- Open the OneDrive folder on your computer (it should appear in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac).
- Copy and paste or drag and drop files from your computer to this OneDrive folder.
- The files will automatically sync to your OneDrive cloud storage.
- Check Upload Status:
- Ensure all essential files have been uploaded successfully by checking the OneDrive application.
- Check the sync status indicator in the OneDrive folder. It should show a green checkmark indicating the files have been synced successfully.
- If any files show a blue syncing icon or a red error icon, wait until syncing completes or address any flagged issues.
- Verify File Accessibility:
- Click on a few files to open them directly from OneDrive.
- Ensure they open correctly and the content is intact.
- For larger files, ensure they open without issues and are fully accessible.
Save Documents to OneDrive Cloud:
- Sign Into OneDrive
- Open a web browser and go to OneDrive
- Sign in using your MU email and password.
- Upload Files via Web Browser:
- Once signed in, click the Upload button (usually represented by an upward arrow) in the OneDrive interface.
- Select Files or Folders depending on what you need to upload.
- Navigate to the location of your files, select them, and click Open.
- Check Your Files:
- Once signed in, you will see your OneDrive dashboard.
- Browse the folders and files to ensure all your essential data is listed.

Step 2: Inventory Installed Software
- List all your software programs, including any specialized or department-specific applications.
- Ensure you have the licensing information, product keys, or installation files for non-standard software.
Step 3: Plan for Software Reinstall
- MU Standard Software: Review the Software at Marquette—Faculty & Staff list to ensure the necessary applications are available.
- Specialized Software: If you use specialized software, verify that you can reinstall it on your new computer and handle any licensing transfers. The user or department is responsible for specialized software.
Note: Departments are tasked with purchasing, maintaining, and ensuring compliance with all software vendors. This responsibility includes obtaining necessary software approvals and utilizing versions fully supported by the vendor.
Step 5: Coordinate with IT Services
- Get Help: If you need assistance with any part of the preparation or transfer process, contact the IT Services TechSquad.
- Deployment Schedule: Please keep an eye on the deployment schedule and try to be available when your new computer is set up. If you can't be present on the scheduled deployment day, don't worry! Your new computer will still be set up in your absence, and we'll leave a detailed document with steps to follow to get started.
Following these steps, you'll be well-prepared to transition to your new computer without losing critical data or experiencing significant downtime.
