New Chats and Channels in Teams
Microsoft will introduce the new Teams chats and channels experience to Marquette University soon. This update consolidates chat, teams, and channels into a single location within Chat. You'll see streamlined communication without the need to switch contexts. Custom sections, advanced filters, and additional tools help you organize and improve your workflow.
Updating to New Chats and Channels
When the update arrives, Microsoft Teams will prompt you to get started with the new experience. You can choose “Do it later” to be reminded every day or so, up to three times, before updating your experience. Here's how to reach the "Chats and Channels" setting in Microsoft Teams.
- A) In the Teams top bar, on the right, select the three-dots menu icon. A drop-down menu appears.
B) Select Settings.

- The Settings window appears.
A) Select Chats and Channels.
B) You must select List layout to use the new chats and channels (i.e., to make Combined view a selectable option).
C) Select Combined view. Teams auto-saves your new Chats and Channels setting. Close the Settings window.
You can also switch back with the view setting as Separate.
Combined View
Stay informed with the combined view. After you begin, select Chat from the app bar in Teams. This will allow you to manage all your collaboration, including chats, channels, and meeting chats, in one location. Your pinned items are imported into the Favorites section. Next is the Chats section, sorted by recency, displaying up to 25 chats at a time with an option to view more. Below your chats, there is the Teams and channels section, which includes all the channels you've chosen to show in your list, grouped by team as before.
Filters
You can quickly focus your chat and channels list by using the filters at the top of the list.

- The Unread, Channels, Chats, and Meeting chats filters are shown by default.
- The Meeting chats and text search filters can be accessed via the "More filters" arrow button. For example, with the Unread filter, you can now catch up in one convenient place on all your unread conversations across chats, channels, and meetings.
- You can also select Unread alongside one of the Channels, Chats, or Meeting chats to narrow your search.
Once a filter or text search filter is applied, the filter stays selected even when you leave your chat and channel list and return to continue triaging where you left off. Click the filter pill again to remove the filter from your list.
Also, new conversation updates will appear in your list even when a filter pill is applied. For example, when applying the Unread filter, new unread chat or channel messages will appear in your filtered list as they arrive. On mobile, you can pull to refresh the view to remove read items from the view.
