For Instructors: About D2L Course Combines
IT Services creates a D2L course site for every class section. Instructors may wish to combine multiple D2L course sites into one. A merged course site — known as a D2L Course Combine — can simplify course management. Or a combined course site helps facilitate student discussion across class sections.
When a D2L Course Combine occurs, all instructors and students enrolled in the multiple course sites move to one parent course site within D2L. Instructors then have one D2L course site to manage instead of several. This also means that all students in the combined course get the same gradebook and grade setup. It is not possible to create separate gradebooks for each section in a combined course. If students in different sections need different gradebook setups, it is recommended that the courses not be combined.
Important: Only enrollments move to the parent course site. Course content, quizzes, student work, and other materials do not move from child course sites to the parent course site. Only develop content in the parent course site. Then complete the D2L Course Combine before the child course sites are used.
Instructors: If you are teaching multiple sections of the same class and want to combine their corresponding D2L course sites into a single site, you have a self-service option. Log in to CheckMarq and access Faculty Center. You’ll first select the parent course site, and then select child course site(s) to combine. For details, see “For Instructors: Combine D2L Courses in CheckMarq Faculty Center.”
You must be an instructor for all sections to make this request. To combine courses where you’re not listed as an instructor, submit a D2L Course Combine Request.
Using CheckMarq for D2L Course Combines offers faster service. For CheckMarq requests during university hours, generally expect a two-hour turnaround. For the TechSquad D2L Course Combine form, IT Services finishes your request usually within two business days.
Once completed, you’ll see two changes in D2L:
- Only the parent course site appears on your D2L My Homepage — likewise for your students.
- Students from all combined sites show in the parent course site's Classlist page.
If you have any questions, place a D2L service request.
