Register Your Device for MU Open Wi-Fi
You can register gaming consoles, smart TVs, digital media players, and other devices for the MU Open Wi-Fi network.
NOTE: Not all devices are capable of working successfully with MU Open Wi-Fi. For example, devices that require older 802.11n/2.4GHz Wi-Fi will often have troubles and may not be able to successfully connect or may have intermittent connectivity due to interference.
Important: Students, faculty, and staff should use MU Secure Wi-Fi for smart phones, tablets, laptops, or desktops.
Find the Device's MAC Address
Before you can register your device, you'll need to find its MAC address — short for Media Access Control. The MAC address might also be called Wi-Fi Address, Wireless MAC Address or MAC ID. MAC addresses contain six pairs of letters and numbers, separated by colons or hyphens (e.g., 78:4F:43:83:20:0B). Some devices might have the MAC address labeled on the device. Or you may need to access the device's settings to find the MAC address. Please do not confuse the ethernet or RJ45 port MAC address with the Wi-Fi adapter MAC address, ensure that you are using the Wi-Fi MAC address.
IT Services recommends you check the manufacturer's website for instructions on locating the device's Wi-Fi adapter MAC address.
Register Your Devices to Allow Them to Connect to the Internet
You can register up to five devices for MU Open Wi-Fi.
- Make sure your device(s) are powered on, and you are on campus near a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Identify the MAC addresses for your devices. Learn how to find the MAC address for some of the most common devices.
- Using your computer:
- Connect to MU Secure or ensure that you are connected to Marquette VPN
- Go to mydevices.marqnet.mu.edu
- Enter your Marquette username and password.
- Agree to terms and conditions.
- Click or tap add and enter the recorded MAC address for your device in both the "Device name" field, and the "device ID" field. After, click "Submit." NOTE: please do not use any special characters, e.g. an apostrophe in the "Description" field, this will cause the add to fail. Also, please ignore "pending" status in the portal--your entry may continue to say "pending" regardless of successful configuration and activation.
Please wait five minutes after adding the device and perform a power-cycle. Test your device's internet connectivity before contacting the IT Services TechSquad. If you have problems, please verify that your device supports 802.11ac/5GHz using search/AI or by reading your products manual and specifications. If it does not, consider using an ethernet wired connection instead. Or, if it is a TV, consider purchasing a media device for your TV that does, (e.g. newer Roku 4K, AppleTV, and GoogleTV set-top boxes and stick devices. Do of course confirm 5GHz support prior to purchase.) When opening a TechSquad ticket, please include a picture of your device's Wi-Fi configuration screen, including MAC address, as well as device Make/Model.
